Despite being forgiven by his friends, Robin could not forgive himself for his Red X fiasco. It is clear he resented himself for this stumble of judgement, and that he wanted nothing more than to see the suit locked up in the vault forever.

Thankfully, this was not to be.

The Titans are called out to halt a routine robbery in progress. Diving through a high-end security system, the Titans track their mysterious thief. Finally, when the thief seems to have reached his destination, the Titans catch sight of him. He turns in the light, revealing one of Robin's darkest secrets: Red X.

A new Red X has broken into the Titans Tower, and stolen Robin's suit. A thief for hire, a person without morals, a selfish and arrogant brat. He outright says he doesn't want to take over the world, or even destroy a city. He's just out for himself, and it clearly doesn't bother him one bit. X doesn't want to be a villain, and more than that, X doesn't want to be a hero.

"Not everyone wants to be the big villain, kid."

He is the contrast to Robin's righteousness. Where Robin stands on a pedestal for good and lit up by his own moral, X is shadowed. Where Robin is selfless, X is only looking out for himself. They strike a perfect balance of stuck up righteousness and careless greed. Not only are they matched in his way, but also physically, it is clear X is Robin's equal on the battlefield. He quickly disposes of the rest of the Titans. Robin is the only opponent who presents X with a challenge.

And it's clear X kinda likes that.

He continually taunts Robin as they fight, boasting and bragging. Robin, already angered at having his worst memory shoved into his face, becomes downright enraged. He cannot stand X's selfishness. Likewise, it seems that X can't stand Robin's do-gooder nature.

Eventually, the two are forced to team up against this episode's baddie: your run of the mill insane scientist (Chang) with a giant cannon. However, it is not the plot that drives this part home. It is the interaction between Robin and Red X. In the latter part of the episode, it is clear they can also get along. Robin rushes to rescue his friends after leaving X locked up, but eventually becomes overwhelmed by the battle himself. Staring down the barrel of a weapon capable of destroying an entire city block, Robin figured everything was over.

But Red X, the anti-hero, the selfish punk, the bratty little tart, appeared and, grabbing Robin around the waist, got him to safety.

"I thought you didn't like to play the hero."
"Doesn't mean I don't know how."

Working together, Robin and Red X eventually defeat Chang and save the city. Red X, smug and smirky, stands on the edge of the crumbling building, the valley of Jump City sprawling out behind him. Robin reveals that, in the excitement, he had stolen the belt that powered X's suit, cutting off his escape route. X is impressed, but hardly stopped.

Without an inch of hesitation, X leaps from the cliff and free falls into the valley, fading from view. All searches by the Titans come up with nothing, though we the viewer are shown a scene of X escaping through a sewer system. Robin locks the belt powering the Red X suit away, hoping to never see it, or Red X, again.

But in a familiar turn of events, this was not meant to be.
