the melancholy of haruhi suzumiyaThe Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya was originally the first in a series of Japanese light novels written by Nagaru Tanigawa and illustrated by Noizi Ito. In 2006, an anime based on the novel and subsequent short-stories aired in Japan. The series focuses on the title character, high-school student Haruhi Suzumiya, and the misadventures she and her friends have as the SOS Brigade, a club dedicated to researching and locating supernatural phenomena.What Haruhi is unaware of is that she possesses god-like powers and three-fourths of her club members are not normal humans. They have been sent by various other-worldly organizations to monitor her mental state; the agents are charged with the task of keeping her happy to ensure the stability of the universe.
kyonKyon is the normal human of the SOS Brigade. Though he is aware of Haruhi's powers and the true nature of the clubs' other members, he himself as no special abilities. Despite the insanity he's continually exposed to, Kyon remains sensible and the voice of reason. He is the SOS Brigade's first member after Haruhi and decides to stay when he learns Haruhi has forcefully recruited two other students into the club. Kyon is usually trying to keep Haruhi's wild imagination and schemes in check, but isn't always able to stop her.
itsukiItsuki Koizumi is the requisite mysterious transfer student, proclaimed so by Haruhi herself. He is an ESPer, a person with supernatural abilities, sent to investigate Haruhi by a group known only as the Agency. When Haruhi's moods swing for the worst, separate realities are formed, complete with giant monsters and the fate of the world hanging in the balance. The ESPers are forced into action. Therefore, the Agency's primary goal is to learn more about Haruhi and keep her content without revealing themselves. Itsuki's personality meshes well with his goals. He is charming, endlessly patient, and very resourceful when it comes to seeing his schemes to completion. Unlike Kyon, Itsuki has no qualms with giving in to Haruhi's requests.
kyon & itsukiKyon and Itsuki are grudging allies in their mission to keep Haruhi from unwittingly bringing about the end of the world. Though they are the most down-to-earth members of the SOS Brigade, they are usually at odds. Kyon staunchly refuses to let Haruhi do as she pleases while Itsuki is more than willing to let her have her way. He will go so far as to help her plots along or create mysterious circumstances of his own in order to capture her attention and sate her desire for adventure. It is because of Itsuki's scheming nature and serene jokes in the face of imminent danger that Kyon states he "trusts his word the least".However, under their antagonistic relationship, they are friends. While other members of the SOS Brigade are silent or facing Haruhi's wrath, the two boys can often be found discussing their predicament. As much as Itsuki drives Kyon up the wall, he eventually comes to accept the ESPer's role in his life. On the flipside, Itsuki takes to Kyon from the beginning and gets a kick out of harassing him.
