Final Fantasy VII tells the story of an organization bent on power, a dying planet, the only woman who hears its cries, a confused young man with a murky past, and the madman with an Oedipus complex who tries to kill them all.
Shinra is sucking the lifeblood of the planet, the Lifestream, from its very veins and using it as a source of power. In doing so, they are slowly murdering the planet itself. AVALANCHE, a violent terrorist faction, is one of the few things attempting to stand against them. Based in Shinra's stronghold, the city of Midgar, AVALANCHE is lead by Barret Wallace, a rough sort with the usual heart of gold. Operating out of a bar in Midgar run by Tifa Lockhart, the team is small in size but not in mission.
That is where our something-of-a-hero Cloud Strife comes in. Childhood friends with Tifa, the Cloud she knew seems to be long gone, replaced by a dashing ex-SOLDIER armed with a formidable weapon and a cool, arrogant persona. Following the destruction of their hometown at the hands of the great General Sephiroth five years earlier, Cloud has become a mercenary and agrees to aid AVALANCHE for a fee.
Put into motion by Cloud's chance encounter with Aeris Gainsborough, a delicate flower lady with a spine of steel, VII's plot soon explodes from the streets of Midgar to trapeze around the entire Planet itself. Cloud's past is ripped open, lies and omissions are brought to light, and the true power of one man's hatred is finally realized. The scope of the story is far-reaching, ranging from the depths of the planet, to the nooks of the human mind.
A Rosetta stone in terms of translation, both loved and hated by fandom, VII has left its mark on the console RPG community at large, whether it's welcome or not. Now expanded into a full-length movie, a cellphone game, a sequel game, and slew of other bits and pieces, it looks as if VII will remain in the fandom eye for quite a while despite its original 1997 release date.
