Aeris is Cloud's spunky guardian angel. She takes it upon herself to figure out what the heck is wrong with that kid and make it right. His resemblance to Zack intrigues her, and she sets out to "meet him". It's clear from the get-go Aeris has a bit of a crush on him. Cloud, being Cloud, is oblivious to her passes, but does develop feelings for her in return.
Much of their story is devoted to Aeris slowly pulling Cloud from his shell. Through her gentle questions and prodding, Cloud is forced to question himself. However, their growing friendship is cut short.
Her death was a fuel for Cloud's fight against Sephiroth. He wasn't only fighting Sephiroth as revenge for torching Nibelheim, but also Aeris' death, and also for freedom. As long as Sephiroth was live, Cloud would never really be free of his control. Regardless of how his feelings for her are interpreted, one thing is very certain: Cloud cared for Aeris very much.

During AC, Aeris' role changes a bit from a flirty and caring friend to a mother-like figure. She again poses questions to Cloud that force him to think about his situation and his actions. Through her gentle probing and Tifa's firm hand Cloud gets back on his feet.
