cat chantThere are thousands of worlds, all different from ours. Chrestomanci's world is the one next door to us, and the difference here is that magic is as common as music is with us. It is full of people working magic...from the lowest Certified Witch right up to the most powerful of enchanters. Enchanters are strange as well as powerful. Their magic is different and stronger, and many of them have more than one life. Now, if someone did not control all these busy magic-users, ordinary people would have a horrible time and probably end up as slaves. So the government appoints the very strongest enchanter there is to make sure no one misuses magic. This enchanter has nine lives, and is known as "the Chrestomanci." Eric Chant, known as Cat, is in line to become the tenth Chrestomanci. For much of his life, Cat believed he had no magic whatsoever and that it was his older sister, Gwendolyne, who was the witch of the family. However, Cat learns that his sister has been siphoning his magic away from him and using it for her own ends. Now in proper control of his magic, Cat trains with the current Chrestomanci to eventually take over the post. Plagued by fears of misusing his incredible magical gift, Cat is often a little on the sulky and self-guilting side. When he forgets to punish himself for crimes imagined, Cat is inventive, firm, and as adventurous as they come. His magic is extremely powerful and unique -- Cat starts where most people end. He can sometimes be using powerful magic and be utterly unaware of it. Cat has appeared in Charmed Life and Stealer of Souls, the latter of which is a short story that can be found in Mixed Magic: Four Tales of Chrestomanci. |
