Set years into the future of the Batman animated series universe, Batman Beyond chronicles the adventures and misadventures of a highschooler named Terry McGinnis. Fleeing the roving and violent gang the Jokerz, Terry arrives at Wayne Manor, where he comes to the aid of its lone and eccentric occupant, Bruce Wayne. It is there that Terry discovers what sits beneath the manor: an underground cave acting as the homebase for Batman. Realizing the truth as Bruce storms in, Terry is amazed and distressed at once.

Later, following the death of his father at the hands of a corrupt businessman, Terry returns once again to Wayne Manor to steal the Batsuit and take revenge. Working with Bruce giving him instructions from the Batcave, Terry stops a shipment of horrific chemical weaponry and begins his days as the new Batman, the Tomorrow Knight.

More than a partnership than a one-man army, the new Batman is still just as dark as the original. Though Gotham city has changed over the years, its underbelly is as deadly as ever. Terry works as the muscle, while Bruce handles the detective side of things. Though this can sometimes switch as Terry grows more into his role, the father-son/mentor-student relationship is always present.

Terry's personal life is strained under his new responsibilities. How long will it be before his family figures it out? Will his girlfriend begin to think he's something other than bad at keeping time? Which life will he, if it ever came to it, choose to keep? With a gritty tone and dark theme, Batman Beyond is as much about the struggle to protect Gotham as it is the struggle for Terry to accept his new role.
